Review: J. Christopher's

On the menu: Salmon Blat which includes salmon, bacon, lettuce, avocado and tomato.

Sometimes, you just want breakfast even if it’s midday. Sitting there like a brightly lit jewel among the boutiques, shops and restaurants in Downtown Woodstock is  where all you can order is either breakfast or lunch. But, that seems to be enough. The menu sports dishes for early risers with an emphasis on a few healthy ones like the Breakfast Parfait, a dish of low fat yogurt, honey almond granola, with strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream ($5.49) and a few disguised as breakfasts but are really desserts like the Chocolate Chipcakes, pancakes filled with chocolate chips and topped with whipped cream ($7.59).

If you are on the South Beach diet or an adherent of the Atkin philosophy, there’s something there for you to start your day without breaking any rules. For the more traditional approach, the range of dishes include an “Eggs Benedict” called The Benny ($8.99), Just Bubba, which is the buttermilk biscuit smothered in sausage gravy, cheddar eggs, roasted potatoes or grits ($7.99).

To keep up the breakfast vibe, there are six different exciting omelets—the Billy Goat: spinach, portabellas, roasted red peppers and goat cheese ($8.99), and even one called the Popeye, you guessed it, with your days’ supply of muscle-building spinach in the mix with shrimp, bacon, mushrooms and cream cheese ($8.79).

For the “late risers” there are four hearty breakfasts: Steak & Eggs ($13.99), Chicken Crepe ($7.89), and even the ever-popular low country star—Shrimp & Grits ($10.49).

For lunch, I was happy to see four tempting salads ranging in price from $7.99 to $10.49 with the Waldorf composed of fresh strawberries, craisins, goat cheese and sweet/spicy pecans on a bed of salad greens and topped with chicken salad. You can add a couple of soups to your meal as well, a Santa Fe Black Bean and a soup du jour.

For those who prefer their lunch between slices of bread, there are 10 hearty ones to select. The J’s Classic Club, a triple-decker wonder with a surprising fried egg in the middle surrounded by turkey, bacon, ham, cheddar and jack cheese ($9.29), the Turkey Gobbler, a Patty Melt and the one I just had to try was the Salmon Blat. For your information a “BLAT” is not an onomatopoeic device, but J. Christopher’s speak for Bacon, Lettuce, Avocado, and Tomato with an added piece of grilled salmon in between ($10.49). That, and a tall glass of ice tea ($1.99) was the perfect choice for me.

The bread was Texas Toast variety, grilled then piled high with tender salmon, abundant slices of fresh avocado, tomatoes, lettuce and a pleasant Thousand Island dressing. This one was a winner in my book. Whether you order breakfast or lunch, you might need to take a nap after finishing many of the hearty dishes on the menu, so plan accordingly.

The service was friendly, prompt and attentive. There is take-out service and the restaurant seems to be a very popular place on Sunday mornings as advisories are posted to suggest that for parties over eight persons you might experience a shorter wait if you call ahead.
