Fire Stone Wood Fired Pizza & Grill

This restaurant is the new kid on the block.

is a new restaurant in downtown Woodstock. It serves pizza baked in an open stone fire oven. The concept is a modern but rustic style restaurant that won't break the bank.

Overview: General manager Sean McEntegart runs the restaurant. Since opening on Aug. 18, the restaurant has been very busy. On a recent Sunday, they were out of several items, calamari among them. I was disappointed because I love calamari. I also realized my salad was missing some toppings. I think they have some kinks to work out. But all in all, the food was delicious.

Décor: The restaurant is aesthetically pleasing when you step inside. With windows from floor to ceiling and wood burning fireplaces in several areas, it has a modern lodge feel. Diners can watch chefs make pizzas in the open kitchen, which also has a counter area.

Fire Stone has a full bar and plenty of seating. I loved the outdoor seating area. It has a fire pit and sits under an olive tree. If I could complain about one thing, it would be the upper windows in the dining area. As we ate our dinner, the sun was so bright that we were a little uncomfortable having to cover our eyes.

Entrees: The menu not only has pizza, but also dinner entrees and small plates. The small plates are enough for one or two people. Two of us split a small plate, salad, pizza and dessert with no problem. The Caesar salad was good, but I missed the croutons. For the small plate, we had corn griddle cakes that were tasty. Three mini corn pancakes were topped with creamy goat cheese and some barbecue pork. The spicy chicken sausage pizza was good, but they were a little stingy on the toppings. I only had sausage on three slices of pizza. For dessert, we chose the berry cobbler. It's served in a mini cast iron skillet and baked in the wood fired oven. The berries were bubbly and sweet with a crumb topping and a mascarpone cream. I would love to go back when they have more calamari. Small plates range from $4.50 to $6.50. Entrees and pizzas range from $10 to $15.

Service: Our waiter was very nice, but as I said before, Fire Stone has some kinks to work out. We sat without water for about 10 minutes as our waiter passed by several times. He was definitely busy with several tables. The whole staff was accommodating and very nice. They were obviously getting used to the overwhelming crowds that were excited about the new restaurant on the block.
