County Solicitor Should Resign

Three-thousand American flags that were placed in Cannon Park for 9/11 were reported "Missing in Action." Solicitor General David L. Cannon, Jr. is behind the actions.

On Saturday, September 10, 2011, the "Salute to Our Veterans" organization placed three-thousand American flags in Cannon Park in Downtown Canton as a memorial and tribute to the fallen heroes of the September 11, 2011 tragedies.

The flags were to remain in the park until Friday, September 16, 2011 at 5:00pm when a proper retirement ceremony was to held.

Concerend citizens called the organizer in charge of placing the flags and conducting the ceremony, on Thursday evening, and stated that all three-thousand flags were essentially "missing in action." Rightfully so, she was upset to hear this. She immediately began investigating by filing a report with the local police department.

On Friday, September 16, 2011, the organizer continued her search for the flags by visiting local businesses to see if they had seen anyone taking them up and by seeing if any surveillance tapes had recorded any action.

The organizer then preceeded to walk in the (old) Historic Courthouse to find the flags stewn all over the floor and in boxes and trash receptacles. Section 7 of the United States Flag Code states that the flag should not touch anything below including the floor, water, or merchandise.

She then visited the Cherokee County Solictior General's office to see if they knew anything. Low and behold, his secretary reported that he had directed pretrial diversion teenagers to go and take up all of the flags. He did not contact the "STOV" organization to let them know that he was going to this.

It is my opinion that the Solicitor, David L. Cannon, Jr., has violated moral turpitude and should resign immediately from his position. He has clearly disrespected our flag, our country, our county, all the volunteers (that placed the flags), and the fallen heroes and their families in which the flags represented.

His reasoning behind removing the flags was that he was "trying to help" and to protect them "from the weather." It you look at weather patterns, it has not rained in a number of weeks in Georgia. Plus, if he would had contacted event organizers, he would have known that the flags were waterproof.
