Is 'The Hunger Games' Kid-Friendly?

Parents speak out about the content and violence of the movie.

In theory, the book is tragic. Teenagers are forced to kill each other while the rest of the country watches. That said, there are a lot of great literary works that are also saddening. The difference is that when Faulkner wrote As I Lay Dying, he didn't have to worry about millions of people watching it on 15-foot screens.

One Holly Springs-Hickory Flat Patch mom, Staci Culberg, went to see the movie after her daughter was invited to see it with friends.

"It was a great movie! Very well done; not cheesy by any means," Culberg said in an email to Patch. "That being said here is what I thought about the violence aspect. Yes, there was violence. No, I wouldn't want my 7 year old to see it. But I agree with the PG-13 rating. The violence was not over the top. It was necessary to the plot. The book was much more graphic then the actual movie is. So for your readers that are wondering if they should let their teens (13+) watch the movie, I would say yes."
