Cherokee History Museum Hosts Pottery Exhibit

The exhibit will display 100 years of pottery made in Cherokee County.

The Cherokee County History Museum and Visitors Center is displaying over a century's worth of pottery that was created right here in Cherokee County.

Since the early part of the 20th century, potters in the Orange community in the eastern part of the county have been creating beautiful and practical earthen wares. Utilitarian pottery from early shops such as those of Edward L. Stork and James P. Reid was simple but beautiful in the tones of the clay used to create the storage vessels.

These days, Orange and Cherokee County can boast renowned artisans such as Ron Cooper and Jay Benzel, who carry on the traditions of fine pottery started by Stork, Reid, and other pioneers.

The works of many different Cherokee County potters throughout the decades is now on display at "The Potters of Orange," an exhibit that will be held in suite 140 of the Cherokee County History Museum and Visitors Center in the heart of downtown Canton. The exhibit runs until Dec. 31.

“The exhibit is a great way to compare the historic potters of Cherokee County with the exciting contemporary artists of today,” said Executive Director Stefanie Joyner.

The exhibit is free of admission and will be open on Wednesday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each week.
