Duffey Communications Inc. promoted Jason Skipper to director of public affairs. He is tasked with leading continued expansion of Duffey’s Public Affairs practice, which seeks to affect local, state and national policy outcomes; influence key stakeholders; and manage complex issues for a variety of industries, according to a release. “Jason’s combined legislative, community relations and issues management experience consistently materializes into impressive results and successful campaigns for our clients,” said Duffey President and CEO Sherri Fallin. “Public affairs continues to evolve,” Skipper said. “Social media – from Facebook and Twitter to the unfiltered, 24-hour news cycle of digital media like YouTube – has changed the way we …

Ice cream v. frozen yogurt. You decide.
There are some words I just hate. "Froyo" is one of them. This week you will vote on all four syllables of fro-zen-yo-gurt. There are only two choices: We can't add any establishments to this poll, but if your favorite is missing, tell us in the comments below so we'll know for next time. You also might want to check out the options in Canton-Sixes Patch, Woodstock-Towne Lake Patch, Alpharetta-Milton Patch, Cumming Patch and Roswell Patch. You have until 9 a.m. Friday to vote. The winner will be based equally on the poll results and on positive reviews and ratings on the directory listings for the businesses. So after you vote in the poll, be sure to click on the name of the business above so you can give your pick a five-star rating and…

The Cartersville science museum is your pick for a family-friendly place to spend time on a staycation.
It appears that when you want to get away without really going away, you go to Cartersville. In this week’s regional Readers’ Choice survey of staycation destinations, three of the top four vote-getters are Cartersville sites: Tellus Science Museum, Pine Mountain Recreation Area and Booth Western Art Museum. And even though six of the 19 poll options are in Cartersville Patch, commenters complained about a couple of the Cartersville sites we left off the list. So it’s only fitting that this week’s Readers’ Choice for favorite staycation destination is in Cartersville: the Tellus museum. Sweetwater Creek State Park in Douglasville Patch actually received the most votes, getting 27 percent. But we give equal weight to reviews and ratings of …

Supporters of the 10-year, 10-county, transportation sales tax are raising money to educate voters.
Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Metro Atlanta Chamber President Sam Williams were among supporters of the regional transportation sales tax referendum who lobbied for its passage Tuesday night in Alpharetta. The Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce held a fundraiser to answer questions about the TSPLOST referendum, which will go before voters July 31. They also were ready to collect checks on behalf of Citizens for Transportation Mobility to continue what they call an education process. Thus far, the proposed 10-county, 10-year, 1 percent sales tax for transportation projects has not proved popular in Cherokee County. Andy Macke, who heads the North Fulton Chamber's push to get the 1 percent regional sales tax passed, touted a predicted 4-to-…

Started in November 2011, GeorgiaLocalSearch.com offers online promotion at no charge to service men and women wanting to start their own ventures.
The high unemployment rates for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan inspired the owners of one West Cobb business to do their part in bringing that number down. Started last November, GeorgiaLocalSearch.com creates online profiles and helps with the overall Internet marketing and presence for businesses in five metro Atlanta counties: Bartow, Cherokee, Cobb, Douglas and Paulding. Service men and women returning from the Middle East who want to launch their own business are given the services free for a year, said Ken Adams, a retired BellSouth executive who runs the business with his wife, Donna Rae, and son, Kenny Jr. “The guys that have gone to Iraq and Afghanistan have sacrificed so much—they’ve given so much of their lives for…

Because she obviously can't cook on Mother's Day, where will you take Mom for the special morning.
Before anyone gets mad about the reference to moms always doing the cooking, let me explain: Nobody, the Cherokee County Fire Department included, wants me in the kitchen. Do you want your kids handling knives and fire? Doubtful. So unless you're married to Emeril Lagasse (BAM!), you're going to need a good place to head for brunch. So where will you take her? You have until 9 a.m. Friday to vote. Your options: We can't add any establishments to this poll, but if your favorite is missing, tell us in the comments below so we'll know for next time. You also might want to check out the options in Canton-Sixes Patch, Woodstock-Towne Lake Patch, Alpharetta-Milton Patch, Cumming Patch and Roswell Patch. The winner will be based equally on the …

I need a place to put my two dogs for three nights.
I'm nervous, OK? I'm one of those people who worries about the stress on my dogs by applying my human emotions on Daisy and Scout Finch. But here's the thing: I really need a vacation. I'm able to get away for a few days and I have no idea what to do with my puppies. I could ask my neighbors to walk them, but I've never really talked to my neighbors. I could put them in boarding, but I'm worried that will freak them out. I could pay someone else to check in on them once or twice a day. They're super low maintenance. They need a walk in the morning and a walk at night and to be fed at night. Help me, please?
