Speak Out: Are Tanning Beds Worth It?

Can you get by with only having one vice?

This year is the first time since seventh grade that I will not be going to the tanning bed religiously.

I'd love to say it was because I had some great change of heart, but it isn't. I just don't have time to lay still for 15 minutes a day.

I always justified it like this: You're allowed one vice. Mine was tanning.

Here's your turn to speak out:

Do you go to the tanning bed? Are you worried about skin cancer? Do you think the benefits outweigh the risks? Tell us in the comments.

I had no idea we had a mobile spray tan in Holly Springs. Please, please, please email me so I can do a story on this: jessie.gable@patch.com.

And yes, in my head I'm imagining this something like a drive through where you get tanned.

My niece died of Melanoma a few years ago at the age of 23 years young. Her mother owned a tanning bed business and I am sure this was a major contributing factor of her cancer. I also have a best friend who has had several cancerous places removed from her face and other places that were damaged by the sun and tanning beds. As teenagers we frequented the tanning beds together. She does not go out in the sun anymore without a hat on.

Carla, I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm trying now to do a story on the best spray tans as a recovering tan-aholic? It's such a hard habit to break!
