Sequoyah Graduation Rate Drops 15 Percent

CCSD officials say a new method of calculating the graduation rate is to blame.

Sequoyah High School's graduation rate is the third lowest in the county after a new, more-accurate method of calculation, the "adjusted cohort rate," was used by the Department of Education, according to a CCSD press release.

The new method of calculation is dependent on data over an extended time period, according to a release.

CCSD officials also said that the new science and math-centered curriculum requires students who struggle in that area to take support classes. Those extra classes make it more difficult for students to accumulate the credits needed for graduation.

Also under the new cohort adjustment calculation, special education students who graduate in five or six years count against the four-year graduation rate percent, according to the release.

Students who transfer without proper documentation are also considered to be dropouts.

The new results for Cherokee County schools follows:

I don't understand how a student transfers without proper documentation? In order to transfer transcripts have to be obtained.

Here's what the release said: "Under the new calculation, written documentation is required for all transfers. If documentation is not obtained within a certain timeframe, the student is assumed to be a dropout." Maybe they counted against them if they didn't transfer soon enough? Any registrars out there (I know you read this).

That is pretty crazy that they would consider them dropouts. So, if the paperwork gets there but is say a day late then that student is counted as a drop out. That is just about crazy.

With to two factors listed that effected the graduation rate, which had the most impact? A Corrected documentation issue may mean more than a restructured evaluation of special needs students.

Also, given this lowered rate, what will be effected? when will this new calculation go into effect?
