State Superintendent John Barge on Tuesday named 367 Advanced Placement Honor Schools, and five Cherokee County high schools were on the list.

For the second consecutive year, Cherokee, Creekview, Sequoyah, Woodstock and Etowah received the AP Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Schools designation.

During the 2010-11 school year, those schools had students who tested in at least two AP math courses (AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC or AP Statistics) and two AP science courses (AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics B, AP Physics C or AP Computer Science).

They were also named AP STEM Achievement Schools, a designation that's earned when students test in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses and at least 40 percent of the exam scores are three or higher. A score of three, four or five on AP exams may result in college credit. 

River Ridge High was not eligible for the honors because it only went up to 10th grade during the 2010-11 school year.

Cherokee students took 2,273 AP tests in 2011 across 22 courses. Seventy-eight percent of Cherokee students scored high enough to earn college credit, the district said in a release.

"Georgia has much to be proud of when it comes to the success of Advanced Placement," Barge said in a statement. "Much of this success can be attributed to the dedication ... at each of our AP Honor Schools."
