Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

A Toilet-Papered House and Missing Campaign Signs

School board candidate Kelly Marlow said her neighbor was "disturbed" by an act of election season vandalism. Turns out, the neighbor told Marlow something different.

Kelly Marlow and Kyla Cromer are running against each other for the Post 1 seat on the Cherokee County Board of Education.

Over the weekend, Canton-Sixes Patch received a tip that Marlow's neighbor woke up to find rolls of toilet paper and Cromer campaign signs in the front yard of his BridgeMill home, not the Marlow signs that were once there.

Reader Addie Price included a picture of the damage in a blog post she submitted to Patch, an image she said she received from Marlow.

In an email Monday, Marlow told Canton-Sixes Patch that her neighbor didn't "want to become part of the story," but was "disturbed by this incident."

Tonight, another neighbor said Marlow's characterization of the homeowner's reaction to the alleged act of election season vandalism was "a total lie.

"The homeowner did not say those things," Angela Chambers told Canton-Sixes Patch.

He didn't say those things to Marlow, Chambers said, because his home was never vandalized.

"Kelly knew the whole story," she said. "I don't understand. Back up. I do understand. It's politics, and it's ugly."

Chambers, a Sequoyah High English teacher, supports Cromer in the race for Post 1 and Janet Read in the contest for Cherokee County BOE Chair.

Last weekend, her Cromer and Read yard signs disappeared from her Chestnut Walk home. Her neighbor's Cromer and Read signs also went missing.

This morning, she read about the "vandalized" home on Patch. She began to write about the missing yard signs in the comment box at the bottom of the article.

The wife of the homeowner of the "vandalized" home, who only identified herself as Rebekah, replied. She repeated a story that she told a Canton-Sixes Patch reporter in an earlier phone conversation after the original article appeared on the site.

"I am the homeowner and would really love to move on from all of this nonsense," Rebekah wrote. "It wasn't politically motivated at all. Just some friends having a little late night fun at our expense. When cleaning up, we saved the signs and gave them back to Kelly to return to their rightful owners. It (sic) hate it that this has gotten so blown out of proportion."

Chambers told Rebekah that she and her neighbor never got their signs back.

"I'm sorry you didn't get your signs back," Rebekah wrote in another post. "I gave them to Kelly yesterday to return. I'm happy to talk more with you about this, but would rather not do it through the comments section of this article."

Chambers and Rebekah took their conversation offline. Over the phone, Rebekah told Chambers that she woke up Saturday, took a picture of the toilet-papered home and posted it on Facebook.

Marlow saw the Facebook post and messaged Rebekah. She asked her if it was a joke or something more. Rebekah told Marlow that it was just a prank.

"Kelly knew this," Chambers said. "That's what's so disturbing ... to me."

Monday night, Marlow and Cromer took questions from media representatives, the public and each other during a debate at the Cherokee County Republican Party headquarters in Towne Lake.

After the debate ended, a Canton-Sixes Patch reporter asked Marlow about the discrepancy between her story and Rebekah's version of events.

"No comment," she said.

This evening, Chambers said she and her neighbor still hadn't gotten their yard signs back.

"I'd love to know," she said, "what she did with her opponents' signs."

How sad someone has to stoop to the level of making up lies go try go win over voters. Has Kelly not figured out yet that we are done with lies? Kyla is such a strong canidate. She will be a great addition to our school board.

Do you realize what the alternative is to furlough days? Either pay cuts or layoffs. With furloughs our retirement and step increases(the only"raise we get) will not be affected. We have lost a great deal of funding (if my recollection is correct around 50 million dollars), and in Cherokee co. around 80% of out budget is personnel---teachers. There is no way to make up for that budget shortfall without affecting teachers' salaries. We know that but we don't like it, of course. Any candidate who says he/she can end furloughs without then either cutting our pay and/or laying off teachers is completely lying.

That's wrong to say it's a lie, Angela. Teachers don't deal with budgets, they only know what they're told to know about what goes on behind closed doors. Budgeting goes much deeper than a spreadsheet shown to you by your superintendent.

Have you ever been to board meeting? Have you ever read any of the material on the budgets? I don't think you have a clue. Please show some proof where furlough can be saved. For that to happens the state would have to fully fund the QBE end austerity cuts and the housing market would have to come back completely. Anyone who is telling you furlough day will go away is not telling the truth.

Pete,

In all due respect I do think we could make some cuts, and raise revenue, at the same time improving schools. For Example:

1) Why not let kids playing sports in school replace it with a gym class requirement and have the sport start at the last period of the day. This would not only safe money it would also increase time for homework.
2) Why not create a home school/public school and offer teachers sessions for any questions with the material. Also allow the students to take non-core classes like gym, art…….at the school. The school district would than pick up students ie revenue.
3) Why not ask for waivers on some of the end of the year testing. The best school districts in the world test way less than us. This would save money on testing as well as administrators.
4) Why not do a better job placing students into tracks that are more aliened with aptitude to lower the cost of summer school, repeat classes……

I have been very supportive of the schools, but all of us must work together in this economy and stop pointing fingers and being defensive.

I can tell you with certainty that alternatives to furlough days are a viable option. I have read through the budget.. and when the furlough days saves 1.5 M per day at 8 days = 12 m, for a 500 m dollar budget, shaving 5% off in other ways should not be a problem. I do it all the time for one of the top fortune 100 companies.

I also have to say that I am disgusted with the behavior of our fellow citizens. I have had my car magnet stolen off my car twice now as a "Kelly" Supporter. I know of at least 5 other people who have had the same issue. Is that what we have been reduced to? I planned to vote based off the positions of the candidates. Aside from the alleged practical joke, based off the behavior of the candidates cronies who think stealing other people's property is cute.. there is nothing more that would cement my decision against voting for someone more than to stooping to such low levels. I am sure the candidates would NEVER support their people doing this, and they would prefer to win off the merits of their platform.

You have to remember that public school are non profit and 85% of the expenses are manpower. So if you shave 5% you are firing teachers. Classrooms are ready overcrowded and that would only make it worse. Fortune 500 company can do this by making less product and laying off people. Cherokee county is a bedroom community for Atlanta. Even in the recession people are still moving to the area, which means more children every year. If you can show a plan where you can shave 5% restore days and nobody lose the job I would love to see it. By the way I completely agree with you about the signs and magnets. There is no good reason why anyone should take them. I for one will be happy in November when the political season is over.

Public schools are not "Nonprofit". They are a government entity - two totally different things. "Nonprofit" is a designation by the IRS in regards to how proceeds are taxed. That's all.

Elizabeth...You're correct, public schools aren't Nonprofit as they are a government entity. Jason was also correct in stating and inferring that public schools operate as an entity without a profit motive...i.e. non profit motive. You're splitting a hair that need not be split.

So just because a Kyla Cromer supporter says Kelly lied, that means Kelly lied? I hear that Rodney has a vendetta against Kelly and have been told that he wears pink tights and listens to George Michael late at night ...

Does Rodney have a vendetta against Kelly? Does he wear pink tights and listen to George Michael late at night? I don't know and I am not willing to go under oath and affirm what I just said ... but what about these people feeding stories to an all-too-willing Patch? Are they willing to swear and affirm they are telling the truth via a deposition?

Why aren't we hearing directly from the supposed victims in this case? Good Lord, the next thing you know, we'll have the bird cage liner (a.k.a. Cherokee Tribune) referencing the Patch ... scary thought with this type of journalism.

With all of the shenanigans I have seen from the CCSD crowd in the last 5 months, you can bet they are scared - scared of losing their highly-paid jobs (some of the highest paid public school teachers in the country), scared of having to be truly accountable for the slow decline that has begun due to an absence of real, honest, collaborative leadership, scared of possibly having to go through what the rest of us have gone through for the last 5 years - layoffs, pay freezes, pay cuts.

FYI - according to open.georgia.gov, salaries accounted for about 45% of the overall expense in 2011 and administrative expense was approximately 15% of that number.

Chris...Your numbers appear to be off significantly. Take at look at the school budget for 2012-2013 (http://portal.cherokee.k12.ga.us/departments/pr/OGP/BUDGET%20AND%20FINANCIAL%20DOCUMENTS/Executive%20Summary%20-%20Tentative%20Budget%202012-13.pdf).

In the budget, you'll notice that the total expenditure are planned at $422.9 million and it will be spent as follows:

Instruction, pupil services, instr improvement and media services: $228.7 million (54.1%)
General Admin, School Admin & Business Services: $23.1 million (5.4%)
Maintenance, Transportation, Food Services: $50.5 million (11.9%)
Building costs & debt service: $116.3 million (27.5%)

Your argument that the schools should experience layoffs like private industry did is wrong. In private business, employment is driven by the demand for a product/service and when the economy tanks, the demand falls and it requires fewer people to meet the lower demand. In education, and government as a whole, the demand for a product or service remains the same, or may increase, when the economy tanks.

I find it ironic that people want the best education for their children but don't want to pay teachers well (and actually want to reduce their salaries), are willing to increase class sizes to a point where the teacher cannot provide one-on-one time with the students, and cry foul if anyone suggests tax increases.

WOW, just wow. Chris Knowles, thank you for making it clear that you are a prejudiced moron. Frank Jones posted real numbers from the Cherokee County website, while you provide very different percentages with no numbers to back your claims. Also, Frank made an excellent point about supply and demand. The last I checked, we have MORE students packed into our classrooms each year. No dwindling demand here for public education! Now, where is the money that should be flowing in with that demand?

-> Reading and Listening you are apparently incapable of either. Please read the last line of my post again for source information. For your information, I have read the budget ... that doesn't tell me anything because once funds are approved, Frank P can spend that money pretty much any way he wants.

-> Frank, I at least give you credit for a rational reply even though I disagree with you vehemently (and I still think you're Frank P). Free Market philosophy works when an entity is responsible for generation of revenue solely through the merits and efforts of its employees. Can't say that is so for CCSD. Now, you could say that education efforts not under the direct control of the district might serve the same effect as competition does which may be why CCA was put here. However, we currently live in a monopoly county ... that seems to think our hard-earned money is monopoly money. Companies still have to be effective and prosperous with less. Why not the district?

We need to stop the gimme, gimme, gimme entitlement mentality and focus on creative, collaborative and effective solutions. Teacher pay is NOT THE problem, but it is A problem. Bloated construction and administrative costs in a struggling economy are also A problem.

For the record, I do care about our county and our schools, and unlike Mike Chapman, I do have "dogs" in this fight and I am going to fight to ensure they get the BEST education possible based on MY choice, not Frank and/or Janet's.

Wow! To say that I am blown away by your disgusting, prejudicial and highly inflammatory comments is a huge understatement!

Aren't you Kelly Marlow's campaign manager or at least one of her advisors for this campaign?

I hope that Mrs. Marlow does not share your view about Rodney which certainly veers into hateful, discriminatory territory. Should we be asking Ms. Marlow whether of not she subscribes to a philosophy of intolerance for individuals that are remotely different from us? If she is to be representing our families and educating our children, I believe her views on these matters suddenly seem very relevant to this election in light of the horrific bullying and hate crimes that have happened across the country in recent years.

If in fact Mrs. Marlow does not share these views, I believe Mrs. Marlow needs to publically address her views on these matters and immediately terminate any relationship she has with you.

I came forward and told the truth even though I knew there would be ugliness. I don't regret that decision. I would not have commented at all if there had not been a false story blaming Kyla supporters. Kelly has strong convictions and is a good mother, and all of this is not going to change her supporters' minds anyway.

As far as the mega money I make as a teacher, what a joke. I could quit tomorrow and make more in the private sector. One of the reasons I don't is illustrated on my Facebook page today. Yesterday, I was diagnosed with cancer. I am touched and humbled by my former students who have sent me kind words. That means more to me today than any salary, benefit, or vacation time. I had always hoped to touch their lives, but they have done much more for me.

@ Chris Knowles - I think you have some other facts incorrect as well. Teachers all over our state have been losing their jobs for the past five years. Many counties around us have has to lay off teachers as well as reduce their pay. Furlough days (AKA: Pay cuts) have been occurring in our county for the past four years as well. We have not had it quite as tough as some of the surrounding counties because our School Board and Dr. P have done an excellent job with the funding we have been afforded by the state. These are probably issues that you should have known about if indeed you are campaigning for someone that is running for a position that would be in charge of issues such as these. Teachers have also been forced to put more money into the retirement system as well every year, from 5% up to 6%, while the people managing those funds are receiving more than $100K pay increases...http://www.ajc.com/news/bonus-pay-stokes-anger-287662.html.

Honestly, I don't see Marlow as anything but an advocate for the Charter School and totally anti- Dr. P. And apparently you seem to have a teacher stigma about you as well.

@Ethan, if you are a teacher then I don't think you have gotten a fair shake. Other districts are cutting to the bone. Look at Bartow County, their budget is about half what we have here in Cherokee County and they have NO assistant/deputy/super-secret superintendents and they share administrative help more than 6 to 1. Where are those type of actions from the CCSD???

Furlough days are not pay cuts - you may get less days cash in your pocket but it doesn't affect annual salary credit for retirement or benefits so I can't feel too bad for you there ...

As for what Fund Managers make, when you get to retirement and you're fully vested and collecting those checks, you'll be glad they got those bonuses. You certainly wouldn't want to do that job yourself ...
