Political Consultant Joins State House Race

Hickory Flat resident Brian Laurens will run for the State House District 21 seat.

The race to fill the Georgia House District 21 seat now has a second contender.

Brian Laurens, a Hickory Flat resident, has declared his candidacy to run for the seat, which has been vacated by State Rep. Sean Jerguson (R-Holly Springs).

Jerguson has decided to seek the Georgia Senate District 21 seat, which also became vacant earlier this week with the resignation of former Senator Chip Rogers.

Laurens, who has an extensive background with the Georgia Republican Party for the better part of a decade, said he decided to run because "now is the time" for "true conservatives" to occupy every level of government.

"Our nation and our state face serious challenges that are best met with the ideals of our founders, free people, free markets and limited government," he said, adding he has been "overwhelmed and humbled" by the support he's garnered. "This community has given me so much (and) it is my desire to give back. After prayerful consideration, and support from my wife, I am offering myself as a candidate for the state house."

Laurens will take on fellow challenger and Holly Springs resident Scot Turner, who declared his candidacy on Wednesday.

Qualifying for the race will take place Monday Dec. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will continue from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 11 and from 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesday Dec. 12.

The special election is slated for Tuesday Jan. 8, 2013.

Laurens, 29, got involved in Republican Party politics while in college, working on the campaigns of conservative candidates across the state.

He worked on the gubernatorial campaign of former Gov. Sonny Perdue in 2002 and has served in consulting, senior staff and volunteer roles on several congressional, statewide and local political campaigns.

In the Republican Party, Laurens has served as precinct chair, a county officer, a district officer and has served on the Georgia Republican Party's state committee.

Laurens has also served as chair of a local Young Republicans club and as the executive director of the Georgia Young Republicans.

Laurens owns Brikel Communications, a political strategy consulting organization.

Laurens and wife Kelly have one daughter.

Common Sense

Is this the drama queen who claimed to have hundreds of robo-call responses to his cell phone last year in the news paper (so newsworthy, mind you)? What a circus this will be!

Looks like Scot Turner will coast to victory if this is his only opponent.

I do not think all of the ponies are out of the barn yet.... just saying - Scot may not be our man. Being the chairman of a precinct for the GOP is whole different ball of wax than actually working under the gold dome.

This guy is an accident waiting to happen. As someone "who has an extensive background with the Georgia Republican Party", he is noted as not being able to “conduct himself in a proper manner,” at a county Republican convention. Not the type of representation that Cherokee County needs...ever.

As Laurens stated- he is NOT a Paul supporter. The Ron Paul camp in Cherokee County conducted themselves with MUCH more decorum than this clown!

Here's hoping he wises up and chooses not to split the vote if a RINO/CCSD candidate steps in.

'RINO/CCSD candidate' - there's no difference between the 2.

Isn't this the same man who had to be removed by the police from the Cherokee County Republican Convention earlier this year because of his behavior? And then had to resign from the executive board?

Yup, that's the guy. He's a total train wreck. Electing him would be taking two steps backwards. I've had a few dealings with this man and imagining him in office makes me cringe.

Who do you support in this race, Dan?

I thought for sure that Lauren's was just confused and thought it was April Fools day and that he would issue another release to let us know that this was all a joke and we had been pranked!

I predict that he breaks all records for the lowest vote count in any election ever held in Georgia! Maybe Will the Winner will take our bets on this one.

Scot Turner is also running for the now vacant seat House District 21 seat. We need honest, accountable leaders who don't sacrifice principle for profit or political gain.

It's almost 12:12 pm... Donate $12.12 to Scot Turner's campaign for State House on 12/12/12!
