Cherokee Charter Academy Seeks Charter Renewal
The new term for the academy will last from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2018.

Cherokee Charter Academy (CCA) will be applying for a five year extension of its charter in February, according to an information item filed with the Georgia Department of Education for its Jan. 17 meeting.
Cherokee Charter Academy has been seen by charter school advocates as the standard-bearer of the school choice movement in Georgia, with Gov. Nathan Deal signing important school choice legislation on CCA grounds last year.
Charter school advocates say that the recent passage of the school choice amendment to the Georgia Constitution seems to have reinforced the notion that parents want to see more educational options available for their children.
CCA has performed at or above Cherokee County School District levels for the CRCT exam administered to third-through-seventh graders, according to a document filed with the Board of Education and available with this article.
The Cherokee County School District currently has 38,000 enrolled students, compared to CCA's enrollment of roughly 1,000.
If the measure is approved, CCA's charter will be valid until June 30, 2018, at which time the school must apply to have its charter extended for a further five years.
The extension of CCA's charter will be brought before the Board of Education during their Feb. 21 regular meeting.

As a parent who no longer has a child young enough to benefit from this, I say I regret not having an option, such as CCA, for my daughter. At least it's there now. The status quo wasn't working and there was no reason to expect doing the same things over and over again were going to change it.
