Holly Springs, Hickory Flat Schools Named to Governor’s SHAPE Honor Roll

Holly Springs and Hickory Flat schools were among the 16S Cherokee County School District schools have been named to the inaugural Governor’s SHAPE (Student Health and Physical Education) Honor Roll in recognition of their commitment to the health and well-being of Georgia’s students through fitness and nutrition.

The Honor Roll program recognizes and rewards the schools, students and teachers that demonstrate excellence on measures of SHAPE participation, data reporting, and student wellness.  The Governor’s SHAPE initiative is a statewide program merging governmental, philanthropic and academic and business communities to address childhood obesity.

Statewide, only 112 of Georgia’s 2,291 public schools (5%) were named to this first-time Honor Roll, with the Cherokee County School District contributing heavily to that total.  The following is a breakdown of the statewide honors: 39 schools received Gold Medals, 34 schools received Silver Medals, and 39 received Bronze Medals.  Schools also will receive additional prizes ranging from banners to sports equipment based on the medal level they achieved.  The Gold Medal schools’ head PE teachers will be recognized by Governor Nathan Deal and Georgia Department of Health Commissioner Brenda Fitzgerald during a pre-game ceremony on the field at an Atlanta Braves baseball game or an Atlanta Falcons football game.

The 16 CCSD schools and their PE teachers who made the recognition possible are:
